“I was born in Iowa, moved to Maryland in elementary school, and then I found the beautiful Lowcountry on a Spring Break with my family in 2006. My sister Joan, “the other cat sister” transferred to SC in 2012. So, retirement in the Charleston area in December of 2018 seemed like a good fit for me! In April of 2019, the cat sisters
made their debut in the Hallie Hill Cattery!
I have had rescued cats in my life most of my 60+ years. I guess I should really say those cats rescued me! Cats are very attentive, vocal, amusing, and therapeutic in my opinion. Additionally, I feel cats are generally low maintenance. How can you
not love someone who snuggles and purrs?
Katerina came home with me in March of 2021, and she has brought so much
joy to my life. With my 40+ years of nursing experience, modified for cats, and
my sister’s willingness to do the hard physical labor, we make a great team. If
you make an appointment to foster or adopt a cat on most Sunday mornings,
you can see the cat sisters in action!”

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Donna Gamble

Like many people from the Northeast, it only took one trip here to the Lowcountry of South Carolina to become hooked!

Our family consists of three rescues, a blue tick coonhound, our rescue from Hallie Hill, a Staffordshire Terrier and our newest rescue a St Dane….All three with unique personalities and are a tight pack who keep track of each other. We are strong advocates of dog safety and wellness and letting them shine in their own light. Our coonhound never ceases to amaze us with her nose work, our Terrier’s passion is swimming in the Atlantic (equipped with his life jacket) and our St Dane is 10 months young so we’re learning what she loves to do most…. she’s in the fun exploring stage.

About the “Totally Tropical” Quilts

The history of quilting, the stitching together of layers of padding and fabric, dates back as far as 3400 BCE. For much of its history, quilting was primarily a practical technique to provide physical protection and insulation. However, decorative elements were often also present, and many quilts are now primarily art pieces.

Be transported to the tropics with these lovely fabrics! Totally Tropical by Lunn Studios for Artisan Batiks is a fun fabric collection inspired by the sights of tropical climates. This collection features leaves, flowers, and water ripples, turtles, all in a beautiful color palette.,..a Robert Kaufman collection.

Both handmade quilts in this year’s raffle are made with hand-dyed Batik fabrics in 100% pure cotton and are twin size.

Raffle tickets are available for purchase for $5 each. All ticket sale proceeds will benefit the animals of Hallie Hill.

Thank you all for supporting Hallie Hill Animal Sanctuary.

Rudy

(aka The Love of my life, my 92# mush)
Rudy was brought to Hallie Hill Animal Sanctuary with his mother and nine siblings at the ripe age of approximately 3-4 weeks old. Rudy was very shy and was always the one in the corner. I remember telling Jennifer Middleton, “if he is the last man standing, I may have to foster him” Fail. He gave/gives the best neck hugs. Rudy was born scared of the world, Noises, people, other dogs… everything, etc. We have worked very hard to make him feel comfortable in the world and not anxious. He has come such a long way, and in my eyes, he is the BEST friend and dog EVER. We have certain protocols when people come over (ignore for 5 minutes) and when we go for walks, but this is our “normal.”

He loves most people who come over and loves his morning bonding walks. Every dog walker knows Rudy and always compliments him on his sweet face! He has play dates with three dogs (one is his brother), loves taking my spot in the bed around 4 am, loves food, loves his pools, Nyla bones, hero balls, and looooovees to lick people!! He is the best thing that has ever happened to us! I have learned patience and that all dogs are individuals and thats OK! His face melts my heart!! Oh… and adopting a puppy with two senior dogs was actually a good call, after the first four months of hell, they taught him a lot and bonded.

Maisy

(formerly Sabrina)
Maisy has brought more energy into the house! She’s always on the go! She LOVES shredding things. She has chosen a couple of items that weren’t intended to be chewed but we are providing lots of appropriate things for her to meet her chewing/shredding needs, so she’s learning fast! She is not a fan of her humans leaving home and was very distressed being in a crate. We are working on that! She has done well with not being crated when left for short periods of time. We tried taking her with us on short errands but she gets sick in the car. She jumps gates (even going up and down the stairs) and opens doors (we have levers that push down) we’ve learned to pull the blinds up so she doesn’t pull them down trying to look out the windows while looking for us. When upset being without humans, she’d potty in the house, that’s getting better though.

Things don’t happen overnight! There’s a learning curve for both the new family member and for the humans who choose to make the commitment of adding to the family. Things can be challenging to start, but with the willingness to understand and knowing that companion animals do not come prewired to our expectations, it will get easier. For us humans, it’s a happy, exciting time to “rescue” a new family member. Our new family member, in most cases, doesn’t realize they were “rescued.” All they know is that their world has changed (maybe for the third, fourth, or fifth time), and they are trying to figure things out! The greatest gift to give to your new family member is time to adjust, clear communication, gentle guidance, understanding, and room to make mistakes and not be punished for making them but to be praised and rewarded for doing things right (in our eyes or to our expectations).

It’s a beautiful journey that never lasts as long as our hearts wish, so make the most of every day and cherish the time we have with these beautiful souls. Show them they matter and that they are safe. Give them choices, let them sniff and take in the world around them. Let them decide if they want to meet new people or dogs or if they are good with just walking by. Be mindful, be their advocate! Build a relationship that goes both ways. We owe it to them!

Stu

I hope all is well! I just wanted to thank you so much for bringing Stu that day. It was definitely fate. This boy has taken my heart and helped it heal over the loss of my Thumper. He runs, plays tag with the other dogs, he sunbathes, he gets super excited and makes the cutest noises, he doesn’t like loud quick sounds, he runs through the house and plays with his best friend, Gibbs. The bond he’s created with our other dogs is so beautiful. He loves to get mommy hugs, he doesn’t like apples or watermelon but Liam keeps trying to feed him anyways. He loves when Liam eats because he’s the perfect height to get fed by Liam, he LOVES stuffed animals and he is a shoe stealer! I’m so grateful for Stu, I can’t thank you enough. Keep up the amazing work that you do.

Tink, Stono, & Zoey

These 3 were adopted from Hallie in 2016 (Tink), 2018 (Stono), and 2021 (Zoey)! They each have their own unique personalities! Our home would not be the same without the joy they bring us! Thank you, Hallie Hill!

Volunteer Spotlight: Hannah Tyre

I’m a Georgia girl from a little town called Baxley in South Georgia. I attended Georgia Southern University and earned my B.A. in Philosophy & Religious Studies. I love the beach, reading a good book, traveling, music (especially Aerosmith), and most importantly, cheeseburgers! When I first stepped foot onto Hallie Hill, I was instantly drawn to the land, animals, and people. It all took me back to some of my best memories spent at my grandparents’ house in Surrency, a small dot on the map just outside of Baxley. I spent most of my life outside surrounded by a southern landscape filled with farm animals, dogs, cats, and a Donkey named Toothpick. So, needless to say, loving animals is a part of who I am. But more importantly I have always had a passion to serve and help. Here at Hallie Hill, I get the best of both worlds. My job consists of bringing a community of people together to do great things to further the mission of Hallie Hill in support of our furry residents!

Hallie Hill Welcomes Bill Walsh

Hallie Hill Welcomes Bill Walsh

Hallie Hill Animal Sanctuary is thrilled to welcome Bill Walsh to our Board of Directors! Bill has a long history of service to the Lowcountry as the award-winning Chief Meteorologist at WCSC TV/ CBS and as a decorated Lt. Colonel (retired) in the USAF Reserve/ U.S Special Operations Command. Bill gives his time and energy to several community charities, including the Ronald McDonald House, One Eighty Place, Big Brothers/ Big Sisters, and Veteran’s Hospital. He has been a valued supporter of Hallie Hill and we are excited that he has agreed to be on our Board of Directors. Bill and his wife Janet share their home with 3 animals, dogs Ruby and Annie, and one cat, Opal.

“As a lifelong animal lover, I’m thrilled to be asked to be a part of the Hallie Hill family and glad to help any way. Hallie Hill is a special place and truly a sanctuary for animals of all kinds and ages. Like any organization, it’s the people who make it what it is, and the volunteers, staff, and board of Hallie Hill all bring so much to this amazing organization. I am looking forward to helping Hallie Hill move forward into the future bringing love and care to Lowcountry animals. See you all soon!” -Bill Walsh
