Meet September’s Adorable Adoptables at Hallie Hill

Looking to add a little more love (and fur) to your life this September? Our sanctuary is home to incredible animals waiting to fall into the arms of their forever families. From playful pups to snuggly seniors and curious cats, each adoptable is brimming with personality and ready to meet you. Click here to fill out an application and make this the month you welcome home your new best friend!

MAX

Max is a super-friendly shepherd mix who just tested negative for heart worms! Max was found as a stray in Colleton County last September, and treating heartworms can be a long journey. This is a huge victory for him. Max is as sweet as they come. He loves golf cart rides, greeting friends, and has even made a few TV appearances representing Hallie Hill.

MONET

Meet Monet, a beautiful calico cat who’s been patiently waiting for her forever home. Monet is a bit shy at first, but once she gets comfortable, she’s a gentle and calm companion who enjoys the company of other cats in her enclosure. She’s not demanding and is perfectly content to observe the world around her, offering quiet companionship and love when she’s ready.

KIMCHI

Kimchi is a lovable pup under a year old. She is getting very good at her “sit” and “down” and absolutely charmed the news crew on her debut appearance on Channel 2. She is smart and adorable and loves her squeaky toy. Kimchi is a medium sized mixed breed terrier, and will make a perfect addition to the right forever home.

ZIGGIE

Ziggie didn’t just arrive at the sanctuary-he rolled in, tipping the scales at a whopping 20 pounds of pure feline presence. Since then, he’s slimmed down a bit, but let’s be real-he’s still a big boy with an even bigger personality. This all-black cat has a strong opinion on two things: mealtime (it should always be happening) and personal space (his, not yours). He’s been known to get a little feisty if you dare try to move him from a spot he has claimed as his throne, but hey, who can blame him? Despite his occasional sass, Ziggie is also a sweet and affectionate guy who enjoys attention-on his terms, of course.

Hallie Hill’s September Celebration is Going on Now through the End of September

Hallie Hill’s September Celebration is Going on Now through the End of September

September is a special month at Hallie Hill Animal Sanctuary. It’s a time to reflect on the animals who have touched our lives, honor the ones with us today, and ensure that future animals in need will always have a safe place to call home. This year, we’re inviting you to be part of our September Celebration, a fundraiser that’s as heartwarming as it is impactful.

We’ve compiled a list of 250 incredible animals, each with its unique story and personality. When you celebrate an animal, you’re making a direct difference in the lives of all the animals at Hallie Hill, present and future. You can select one or more animals from the list and donate between $1 and $250 in their honor. Every dollar raised goes straight to our animals’ daily care, food, and medical needs. The list is randomized, so no animal is ranked above another.

As a thank you for your donation, you’ll receive a personalized certificate recognizing your contribution and the furry friend(s) you’ve chosen to celebrate. It’s a small reminder of the big impact you’re making.

With 250 amazing animals waiting to be celebrated, there’s never been a better time to show your support. Whether you give a little or a lot, you’re helping us continue our mission of providing love, care, and second chances to animals in need. Be part of the Hallie Hill September Celebration because every animal deserves to be celebrated.

Our Special Pets

Once we take an animal in, we promise it a home for the remainder of its life, should it not be adopted.  We work with local shelters and rescues taking in dogs that might not get adopted due to age, medical, or behavioral issues helping Charleston to achieve the status of a NO-Kill Community.  Hallie Hill is UNIQUE.  We have over 30 acres of land that provides large enclosures for dogs to live and play.  There is a pond for swimming, dog houses with straw and heat lamps, and individual pools to help keep the animals comfortable.  The animals are well cared for with the help of many dedicated volunteers and staff.

Shelter. Food. Love.

smokeySmokey’s story is much like the others at Hallie Hill. He wandered up to Hallie Hill in 1997. He was found collapsed outside our main fence suffering from severe head wounds and starvation. The employee who first spotted Smokey, mistook him for a scrap of fabric someone had tossed to the ground and described him as a “bag of bones.”

After a few months of love and care, Smokey was far from starving. He enjoyed his time at Hallie Hill and spent his geriatric years tottering around the barn or sunning himself in the yard. He will forever be at home at Hallie Hill – resting in the cemetery.

Hallie Hill provides sanctuary to approximately 200 dogs and cats. Many of these animals bravely survived abuse and/or neglect to arrive at Hallie Hill for the care and love they have always deserved. Within days of arriving, each animal is seen by a veterinarian to receive any and all medical attention they need to be healthy – from heartworm treatment to complex surgeries. Once the new arrival is healthy, they are introduced to an enclosure with plenty of space, a house complete with an automatic watering bowl, bedding, and heat lamps in the winter.

Our primary goal at Hallie Hill is to provide a loving home with all of the comforts possible to the animals for which we care.

BOARD MEMBER AND LIVE 5 CHIEF METEOROLOGIST, BILL WALSH

“I support Hallie Hill because it truly is a sanctuary for animals looking for a home or those animals that need a forever home. We share this planet with animals who need help and assistance, which is the mission of this great organization and of the volunteers and donors who make it happen everyday. Love is in the air with every bark and meow! “

BOARD MEMBER, CAROL PREISINGER

“Hallie Hill provided a safe and nurturing place for my dog Beau when I had to make one of the hardest decisions of my life. When I met the generous founder who brought Hallie Hill to life, and the directors and volunteers who keep the animals thriving everyday, giving my support was the easiest decision I’ve ever made. ”

BOARD MEMBER, HARVEY LOEW

“I support Hallie Hill because it breaks my heart to see neglected, abandoned, or abused animals. Hallie Hill provides appropriate care, treatment, and an environment suitable for cats and dogs to thrive and be adopted or live out their lives without fear or threat. The staff and volunteers at Hallie Hill provide the kind of culture human society would benefit from.”

BOARD MEMBER, JOHN BYRNES

Hallie Hill Animal Sanctuary and its mission align with my core values and passion for promoting animal welfare in the community I love. By taking in animals that are neglected, elderly, infirmed, fearful, abandoned, dislocated, or in danger of euthanasia from overcrowded county shelters, they provide a no-kill Sanctuary space and environment for some of the neediest animals in the region.

Otis
Otis is a cheerful senior mixed-breed with a sweet smile that will instantly win your heart. With his warm personality and calm demeanor, he gets along well with the people and dogs he meets at the sanctuary. Otis is a mellow companion who enjoys a stroll or a cozy nap in the sun. Like many dogs with a past, Otis can be protective of his food, so he’ll thrive in a home that respects his space during mealtime. He would do best with experienced dog owners or in a house where feeding routines can be managed with care. Otis may be in his golden years, but his gentle nature and joyful spirit make him a special friend. Otis might be your perfect match if you’re looking for a loyal senior to share peaceful days and sweet smiles.
Libby
Libby is a lively 2-year-old black Lab mix bursting with energy and potential. Life at the sanctuary can be overstimulating for this sweet gal, so she often comes across as extra hyper. Under all that excitement is an intelligent, loving dog who needs little guidance. Libby is very food-motivated, which makes training easier, and she’s already showing signs of being a quick learner. Libby will blossom into a well-mannered and loyal companion with consistency, repetition, and a patient heart. She would thrive in an active home with someone who can help her channel her energy positively and continue her training journey. If you’re looking for a bright, affectionate dog ready to learn and love, Libby is ready to meet you!
Poppy
Meet Poppy! Poppy is a striking black and white spotted beauty who just might be one of the most adoptable dogs at the sanctuary! With her friendly personality and easygoing nature, she’s captured the hearts of everyone she meets, both two- and four-legged. Poppy is bright, alert, and eager to be part of the action. She’s been wonderful with the other dogs at the sanctuary and absolutely adores people. Whether it’s playtime in the yard or relaxing by your side, Poppy is happy just being with her people. If you’re looking for a loyal, loving, and well-rounded companion, Poppy might be your perfect match. Don’t wait- this girl is ready to bring joy and companionship into her forever home!
Tippy
Tippy is a beautiful calico cat with a soft heart and a sweet spirit. Affectionate and gentle, she loves attention and is always happy to curl beside you for pets and purrs. She adjusts to new environments with surprising ease and confidence, making her an excellent companion for almost any home. Tippy’s left ear was clipped when she was spayed through a Trap-Vaccinate-Alter-Return (TVAR) program—a small mark that tells a story of care and compassion in her past. Now she is ready for her next chapter, a cozy, loving forever home. If you’re looking for a cuddly and affectionate feline friend, Tippy could be your perfect match!

Volunteer Spotlight: Gwen D’Orazio

Volunteer Spotlight: Gwen D’Orazio

A Cattery Companion with a Heart for Cats
Suppose you’ve ever wandered into the Hallie Hill cattery on a quiet afternoon and spotted someone eating her lunch and giving head rubs to some affectionate felines. In that case, chances are you’ve met Gwen D’Orazio. A devoted weekly volunteer since 2023, Gwen has quickly become a favorite among the community cat colony and the “Sweethearts,” as she lovingly refers to the sanctuary’s resident cattery cats. Whether offering head rubs or simply providing a calm presence, Gwen has a special way of making each cat feel cherished.

Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Gwen’s journey has taken her from the Southwest to the Northeast and now to the warm charm of the Lowcountry. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of New Mexico before launching a 20-year career in Boston as a jewelry buyer and product development design manager for a multi-channel catalog/website company. In 2015, Gwen and her husband traded snowstorms for sunshine and moved to Charleston—and she’s never looked back. Though she and her husband now share their home with a tennis-named pup named Rafa, Gwen’s heart has always belonged to cats. Over the years, she’s adopted three cats and cared for several feral colonies. One of those colony cats led her to Hallie Hill—a feral cat in need of rehoming brought her through our doors, and she says she’ll be forever grateful that we opened both our hearts and our sanctuary to him. By day, Gwen serves as a Content Director for an Amazon agency, but her passion for animals fills her spare time. She enjoys traveling, Pilates, and quiet evenings with her husband, but her weekly visits to Hallie Hill feed her soul. She calls it a “true blessing and honor” to volunteer alongside some of the most thoughtful and kind individuals she’s ever met.

Thank you, Gwen, for your dedication, compassion, and all the love you bring to our feline friends!
