Volunteer Spotlight: Brian Laughlin

I was born and raised in Fort Worth Texas. I lived in Texas most of my life until moving to South Carolina three years ago. I moved here to be closer to my stepfather and mother. My stepfather Les suffered from a stroke during his third heart surgery, and his health was a concern. I helped him as much as possible when I got here by going with him to physical therapy and supporting him the best I knew how. He made great improvements and recovered well. Being close to my family is wonderful, and South Carolina quickly became home. Soon after moving here, I started working at Water’s Edge Restaurant on Shem Creek. I accepted a management position in July of 2020. When I have time, I love to go fishing, play golf, explore the wilderness, and watch movies.
Over four years ago, I decided to seek help from addiction to drugs and alcohol. God placed the right people in my life to guide me in my recovery and show me a new way to live. Part of my recovery process involves being of service. I began to look for places to volunteer and Hallie Hill was on the top of my list. The sanctuary supports a no-kill community and takes in animals that might never get adopted due to age, medical condition, or behavioral issues. Many of these animals deserve a second chance, much like the one I was given. A new life without fear of abuse or violence, surrounded by people who love and care for them.
Volunteering my time and working at the sanctuary is the brightest part of my week. Every staff member is passionate about their mission and commits themselves to helping animals every day. I have a great deal of respect for everyone who pours their heart into making sure that Hallie Hill continues to provide a quality level of care for these animals.
Letter to Amelia from Katherine and Chris

Letter to Amelia from Katherine and Chris

Amelia was our quiet gentle healer. To me her mission in life was accomplished at Hallie Hill. Our hearts were shattered by our own loss when we first met her. She was like a gentle gardener; tending to a broken branch… quietly and lovingly she nurtured the break, and it began to grow and blossom again. She expected nothing and gave all. Amelia will always be a part of us. We are honored that we were blessed to be receivers of the gifts she brought… truly Heaven sent. She is now with her maker in perfect peace. Amelia, you are loved. Job well done sweet girl… Rest now. Your mission was accomplished.

Elio Levy

Elio Levy

Hallie Hill Welcomes Elio Levy To the Board of Directors!

Mr. Levy comes to Hallie Hill with a wealth of experience in the field of Information Technology, including strategic planning, customer recruitment and management and marketing planning strategies! We welcome him to the Hallie Hill family!

Mr. Levy, and his wife, Ellen, live in Ravenel with two beloved pets, Oliver and Joye. Oliver is a beautiful cat, 14 years young and Joye (Bobo) is their 10 year old canine cutie!

Mr. Levy shares his thoughts with us on the joy of having pets: “Animals are special beings and those who have been lucky enough to experience a connection with them know it very well. Animal nobility is a true teaching. Thanks to them we are more humble, empathetic, loving people. They give us their love unconditionally, without asking for anything in return, doing us good.”

Just What the ‘Dog-tor’ Ordered

Just What the ‘Dog-tor’ Ordered

Michele Griffin, our Assistant Director and Adoption Coordinator, is exactly what we needed at HHAS. Anyone working with dogs would be lucky to have her on staff because this lady is truly amazing!
First, she is a CPDT-KA which means she is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed. Achieving this certification is no easy feat. It requires a minimum of 300 hours of experience in dog training and passing a rigorous national exam that demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in the current scientific evidence of canine behavior, development, training, and much, much more.

Recently, Michele also became a licensed Family Paws Educator! This means she has the knowledge to share with families with dogs who are expecting a baby or who have a toddler. Michele can give them advice and real-life strategies on how to prepare families with dogs for life with a baby and how to safely navigate the changes that will occur as the baby grows to a toddler.

Hallie Hill has many special needs dogs that are at the sanctuary because their previous owner did not understand their behaviors and needs. As our adoption counselor, Michele counsels adopters prior to, during, and after each adoption to increase the rate of success for the placement of the dog. She strives to reduce stress for both the family and the dog so everyone feels good about the new family dynamics. We are fortunate and so proud to have Michele as a part of the Hallie Hill team!

Hippy
At almost 2 years old, Hippy is full of energy and ALWAYS happy to see you! She is such a petite girl with a HUGE personality. She lives with other dogs at the sanctuary and does great! She doesn’t do well with a fence between her and another dog, though, and leash meetings are frustrating. Leash reactivity is something that can be worked with! She really is fun and will make an AMAZING companion for someone!

Drake
Meet Drake! This handsome guy is 4 1/2 years old and is a boisterous ball of fun! He thinks meeting people is very exciting and is working on not jumping up. Drake has gotten along well with his female “roommate”, and is currently being treated for heartworm. Just look at those eyes. They melt your heart! This boy would love to find an active family to take him home!

Meatloaf
Meatloaf is a big ol’ ham of a pup! (Don’t you love that name?) He loves to give kisses and would love a home to call his own. Meatloaf has a dog roommate that he has been doing well with! He will need a house with a fenced yard as he has previously displayed not-very-acceptable behavior while on leash. He loves people and would definitely love you unconditionally and make your family complete!

Dunk
Dunk is a beautiful boy, the only white on him is the tip of his tail! At just 1 year and 7 months, he is a young guy with lots of playfulness in him—he is ready to entertain and bring joy to your family! Dunk is fully vetted, healthy, and happy, except he needs a loving family to make his life perfect! Come and meet this sweet boy. You WILL fall in love.

Moxie
Moxie is a perfectly sized female terrier mix who is 8 years young! With silky fur and saucer ears, she is such a cutie! She is good with other dogs but, when leashed, is not quite as friendly. Moxie has had multiple surgeries to close a hole in her hard palate (after a bad run-in with a stick) but still has a small opening that causes her to sneeze often but does not affect her quality of life! Meet this girl and fall in love!

Ranger
Meet sweet Ranger! This 6-year-old boy is a happy guy who loves running around with his friends in our yard at the sanctuary. He loves a good game of fetch as well. He’s very affectionate and loves to shower you with kisses. He does love attention and tries to get yours when he can, so he’d probably be best in a home with people who are home more often than not. Frankly, we don’t know why this great guy hasn’t been scooped up! Call and meet him!

Edisto
This beautiful male German Shepherd mix is just 3 years old, and she is so pretty! Edisto has a chill personality and did very well when we had her meeting the public at some of our recent community events! Edisto does well on a leash and would love the opportunity to be a valued member of your family! Where are our Shepherd lovers? Go to halliehill.com, fill out an application and come out to the Sanctuary to meet this very pretty girl.

Donny
Look at that sweet face! Donny is just a year old, still a kitten, and is missing his sister, Marie, who found her fur-ever home a few months ago! He is very timid with new people at first (which is why he is still with us), but we have found he warms up quickly and will seek you out when he knows you! Tabbies have the most wonderful personalities, and Donny would make a wonderful addition to your family. Come meet this fur baby and gain his trust!
